I did not want to get a new car insurance policy. Everything else in DC costs an arm and a leg so I assumed a new policy would too, especially considering I’m the the ghetto. So I stalled, and stalled until I couldn’t stall anymore.
I did my research and imagine my surprise when I received a few quotes that were the same as or less than what I was paying in Michigan. What’s that all about?
I was all set to press the “order” button on Geico’s website but then I decided to call in just to make sure I had everything correct. Making a phone call is like hot death to me; especially when a company has a website, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet.
The lady was extremely happy to help me purchase my policy. So happy in fact that if I hadn’t already been ready to order I would have felt pressured…those darn sales techniques.
She was very patient and answered all my questions. And you know my number was question was...”and if my car gets stolen…” She assured me, I was covered and that’s all I need to know.
I liked that you could pay by credit card and pay in installments. The other company I was considering didn’t offer that. I also appreciated that the service representative gave me some hints on using the policy “don’t file a claim if…because it would be cheaper to…” She also told me some of the things that they offer free of charge.
And I thought Geico was just a bunch of hype hiding behind a happy lizard. I hope they are as friendly if I ever need to make a claim.

Having filed two claims with Geico before, I can say that their process is fast. Very fast. Sometimes too fast; in all the rush to get everything settled, its easy for their adjusters to miss things. Definitely shop around every year or two, though. GEICO was the cheapest for me a few years back but came in far behind other vendors the last time I chose to shop around.
That’s (somewhat) good to hear. As soon as I hung up I was thinking “boy, she was really nice.” Then my mind turned to “I wonder if they are that nice until they get your money and then it all goes downhill”. I can be so cynical sometimes.
